How to configure the text-only console client? PDF Print E-mail

The following instructions show you how to configure your text-only console client and is targeted towards new users with little or no experiences with the folding client. Step 1-3 helps you to set up the proper shortcuts to start and configure the clients as needed. If you are familiar with how windows operate, feel free to skip those steps.

1. Download the text-only console client (FAH502-Console.exe) into this directory - C:\fah
2. Create a shortcut to the FAH502-Console.exe and name it 'Configure Folding Client'. Add -configonly to the 'Target:' path as shown in the screenshot below. This is only to be used to configure the client. It will exit after configuration process.

3. Create a shortcut to the FAH502-Console.exe and name it 'Start Folding Client'. Add -advmethods to the 'Target:' path as shown in the screenshot below if you have a PC with an Intel processor. For PCs with AMD processor, you can skip this step and run the FAH502-Console.exe without any other command switches.

4. Double click on the shortcut created in Step 3 above ('Configure Folding Client' shortcut) to configure the client.

  • User name [anonymous]?
Put the user name you wish to use here. Use the same username when configuring different clients on different PCs. That way all points will accumulate under your username.

  • Team Number [0]?
Put '2999' here. 2999 is Folding@Malaysia's team ID.

  • Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service (yes/no) [no]?
    Put 'no' here.

  • Ask before fetching/sending work (no/yes) [no]?
Put 'no' if you do not wish to be prompted and 'yes' if you wish to be notified before the client fetches/sends WUs. We recommend answering 'no'.

  • Use Internet Explorer Settings (no/yes) [no]?
Put 'yes' if you wish to use IE settings, if not 'no'. We recommend selecting 'yes' if you have some types of firewall installed, as this will alleviate some problems we have seen with firewalls even after configuring the firewall properly.

  • Use proxy (yes/no) [no]?
Put 'yes' if you use a proxy, if not 'no'. If you entered 'yes', you will then be prompted to enter the relevant proxy information.

  • Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB in size (such work units may have large memory demands) (no/yes) [no]?
Put 'no' here unless you wish to allow this. Please read the information here on this if you decide to allow it.

  • Change advanced options (yes/no) [no]?
    Put 'yes'.

  • Core Priority (idle/low) [idle]?
    Put 'idle'.

  • CPU usage requested (5-100) [100]?
Put '100'. Laptop users might want to descrease this value if it gets too hot.

  • Disable highly optimized assembly code (no/yes) [no]?
    Put 'no'.

  • Pause if battery power is being used (useful for laptops) (no/yes) [no]?
Put 'no' unless you are using a laptop and wish to have this option enabled.

  • Interval, in minutes, between checkpoints (3-30) [15]?
    Put '15'.

  • Memory, in MB, to indicate (X available) [X]?
Enter in the amount of memory to make available to the client.

  • Request work units without deadlines (no-pref/no/yes) [no-pref]?
Put 'no'. If you have a slow PC or not switched on for a substantial amount of time and it fails to meet the deadlines, put 'yes' here to request work units without deadlines.
  • Minimize networking -- get and submit work in batches (no/yes) [no]?
Note: You will only get this option if you answer 'Yes' to the question above.
  • Ignore any deadline information (mainly useful if system clock frequently has errors) (no/yes) [no]?
Put 'no' unless your system clock frequently has errors.

  • Machine ID (1-8) [1]?
Put '1'. However, increment this number for each extra client you are configuring that will run on the same PC. Please read 'How to set up 2 or more console clients on a single computer?' FAQ.

After the step above the client configuration screen will exit. Double click on the 'Start Folding Client' shortcut to start the client with the proper command switches or 'FAH502-Console.exe' to start the client.

If you need to reconfigure the client, please stop the client and double click on the 'Configure Folding Client' shortcut that you have created in step 2.
